Fifty years later, the legend is reinvented with the new Omega Co-Axial 3861 manufactured movement. This Sedna gold version is breathtaking. Dare you?
A myth
The Speedmaster Moonwatch is a watchmaking myth in its own right, with its last face-lift in 1996. Designed in 1957 by Claude Baillod and Pierre Moinat, the Moonwatch has evolved but very little after the 4th generation of 1964 (Ref. 105.012). To make evolve such an icon is not an easy thing but Omega has brilliantly taken up this challenge by improving everything that could be improved without denaturing this great classic. As the icing on the cake, this new generation prestigious sapphire crystal features many luxurious details referring to its glorious past.
The Moonnwatch sapphire version under the microscope
This reference 310.60.42.50.01.001 is the one with a sapphire crystal and a bracelet made entirely of sedna gold. Its black varnished dial is similar to that of the 1861 but it is a vintage-inspired stepped dial. This gives it more depth and emphasises Omega's signature "pie-pan" effect. The chronograph hand has the same "teardrop" shape as the Speedmasters used on the Moon. Here is a list of the elements that distinguish this new version of the Moonwatch:
- The logo: on this sapphire version of the Speedmaster Moonwatch, the Omega logo is applied in Sedna rose gold
- The typeface: you'll also notice the new design of the minute/second markers that takes into account the frequency of the new calibre 3861
- The case: this high-end version features a case made entirely of Sedna Gold, an exclusive flaming rose gold alloy
- The case back: on this sapphire version, the 3861 calibre and its highly elaborate finishes are visible through a transparent sapphire case back
- The bracelet: a highly resistant sdna gold bracelet equips this special model Speedmaster Saphir 3861
The OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 3861
The 3861 powers all new versions of the Moonwatch without distinction. This movement is not new per se, but until now we've only seen it in action in highly prized limited editions (Apollo XI and Silver Snoopy Award). This new 3861 chronograph movement is partly based on the calibre 1861 even though it features no less than 50% new components. It has a Co-Axial escapement, which reduces friction and increases its precision, which is between 0 and +5 seconds per day on average. Officially certified by the METAS, this calibre is capable of withstanding magnetic fields of over 15,000 gauss and has a power reserve of 50 hours. As for decorations, the Omega calibre 3861 of this Speedmaster Moonwatch is rhodium-plated and its bridges are decorated with Côtes de Genève.
Did you know ?
Any true Speedmaster Moonwatch is defined by a few details referring to its origins. The material used for the case is Sedna gold, but what else? Unique to the brand, this material is a highly resistant flaming rose gold alloy with enhanced longevity. It takes its name from an orbiting object that has been described as one of the reddest objects in our solar system. As you will have understood, this Speedmaster Moonwatch model, also available in its bracelet leather black ref. 310.63.42.50.01.001, shines and won't go unnoticed !
