50 years later, the myth evolves by changing everything but its iconic look. This luxury version of the Moonwatch is equipped with a sapphire crystal and a transparent caseback revealing the fantastic Omega calibre 3861, a masterpiece!
A myth
The Speedmaster Moonwatch is a watchmaking myth in its own right, whose last face-lift dates back to 1996. Conceived in 1957 by Claude Baillod and Pierre Moinat, the Moonwatch has evolved but very little since the 4th generation in 1964 (Ref. 105.012). To make evolve such an icon is not an easy thing but Omega brilliantly took up this challenge by improving all that could be without denaturing this great classic. The icing on the cake is that this new generation of sapphire crystal watches features a number of luxurious details referring to its glorious past.
The Moonnwatch sapphire version under the microscope
This reference 310.32.42.50.01.002 is the one with a sapphire crystal and a black calf leather strap with tone-on-tone stitching and a folding clasp. Its black varnished dial is similar to that of the 1861 but it is a vintage-inspired stepped dial. This gives it more depth and emphasises Omega's signature "pie-pan" effect. The chronograph hand has the same "teardrop" shape as the Speedmasters used on the Moon. Here is a list of the features that distinguish this new version of the Moonwatch:
- The logo: on this sapphire version of the Speedmaster Moonwatch, the Omega logo is applied
- The typography: you will also notice the new design of the minute/second indexes which takes into account the frequency of the new calibre 3861
- The case: Omega has succeeded in refining the case of the new Speedmaster 3861 to a thickness of 13.58 mm (compared to 14.3 mm for the old 1861 version)
- The case back: on this sapphire version, the calibre 3861 and its very elaborate details are visible through a transparent sapphire case back.
- The strap: the strap of this new Speedmaster Sapphire 3861 is made of smooth black calf leather and is equipped with a new folding clasp engraved with the Omega logo allowing a very practical two-position micro-adjustment
OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer 3861 caliber
The 3861 powers all new versions of the Moonwatch without distinction. This movement is not a novelty, but until now we have only seen it in action in very popular limited series (Apollo XI and Silver Snoopy Award). 3861 chronograph movement is partly based on the calibre 1861, even if it includes no less than 50% of new components. It has a Co-Axial escapement, which reduces friction and increases its precision, which is between 0 and +5 seconds per day on average. Officially certified by the METAS, this calibre is capable of withstanding magnetic fields of over 15,000 gauss and has a power reserve of 50 hours. As for the decorations, the Omega calibre 3861 of this Speedmaster Moonwatch is rhodium-plated and its bridges are decorated with Côtes de Genève.
Every detail matters
Every true Speedmaster Moonwatch is defined by a few details that refer to its origins. This new model is no exception with its crown guard, larger pushers, "Professional" text on the dial, "lyre" lugs, black aluminium tachymetric bezel and "dot-over-90" marker.
