The colouration of ruby results from the presence of traces of chromium within its crystalline structure. The intensity of the hue is directly correlated to the chromium concentration: the higher the chromium concentration, the deeper and purer the ruby's red colour. Rubies come in a wide range of hues, from brilliant red to pinkish red. However, the most prized specimens are distinguished by an intense red hue, described as "pigeon's blood" - a term used in particular to evoke our exceptional piece, Le Siam. In addition to their captivating colour palette, rubies are also celebrated for their remarkable hardness. With an index of 9 on the Mohs scale, they rank among the most robust gems, second only to diamonds in terms of strength.
