Omega Seamaster 37mm “Milano Cortina 2026”: A tribute to the Olympic legacy and spirit
For more than 90 years, Omega has been closely linked to the Olympic Games, a partnership that began in 1932 in Los Angeles. As official timekeeper, the Swiss brand has played a vital role in the measurement of time and the accuracy of results, contributing to the history and emotion of each edition. This commitment, which is passed on from generation to generation, testifies to Omega's passion for excellence and its unwavering support for athletes from all over the world.
One year before the Olympic flame lights up Milan for the 2026 Winter Games, Omega honors its role as Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games with a special edition 37 mm Seamaster. Like the watches for the Melbourne and Beijing Games, this model commemorates Omega's history in Olympic timekeeping and its ongoing commitment to the event.
A timeless design inspired by the past
Omega is repeating the recipe of its “Beijing 2008” edition, presenting us with a watch with a vintage look inspired by one of its former references! In fact, this is not really the first time that Omega has presented us with this Olympic edition of its beloved classic Seamaster. The first time was in 1956, when the Olympic Games were held in Melbourne in the summer and in Cortina d'Ampezzo in the winter. The Omega from that time was a Seamaster XVI reference 2850, also known as the Seamaster “Cross of Merit”.
The Seamaster XVI was produced in two versions, one classic and the other with dials and casebacks bearing the Cross of Merit. In 1952, following the Helsinki Olympic Games, Omega was awarded the Olympic Cross of Merit for its contribution to timekeeping. Thus, in 1956, to celebrate the Olympic Games in Melbourne, Omega presented this reference 2850 with its very characteristic lugs, a 34 mm gold case, a flat bezel with a coin-shaped edge, a Calibre 471 automatic movement and a dial adorned with faceted triangular hour markers and a XVI logo applied at 6 o'clock.
In 2008, Omega decided to recreate this watch for the Beijing Summer Olympics. The yellow gold case was increased to 37 mm in diameter while retaining its distinctive design and lugs. Its ivory-colored dial retained the applied hour markers of the vintage version, but the logo at 6 o'clock was replaced by the Roman numeral XXIX, in reference to the 29th Summer Games. Still powered by an automatic movement, this watch was limited to just 88 pieces. Otherwise, in terms of design and shape, the watch remains very similar to the 1956 Seamaster. However, that version had a black leather strap instead of a gold one.
The history of Omega and the Olympic Games continues with the Seamaster 37 mm Milano Cortina 2026. This model, following on from the watches of Melbourne 1956 and Beijing 2008, is a symbol of the brand's commitment. As Omega says, it is a “timepiece that celebrates the lasting legacy of an iconic collection”. 70 years later, this watch hasn't aged a bit!
The case of the Seamaster, in “Moonshine” yellow gold, faithfully reproduces the style of the 1956 Ref. 2850, with a fully polished finish. This Moonshine gold, Omega's signature, is distinguished by its paler and more discreet hue than traditional yellow gold, inspired by the brilliance of the moon. Composed of gold, copper, silver and palladium, this unique alloy offers increased resistance to discoloration, thus ensuring the longevity of the watch's brilliance. Although slightly larger than the original, it retains the size of the 2008 special edition (37 mm in diameter, 45 mm in length and 11.4 mm thick). The flat polished bezel and domed sapphire crystal contribute to the overall elegance. The “log leg” lugs, a distinctive feature of this model and its predecessors, have an angular profile and a subtle separation of the middle section. The hexagonal crown is stamped with the vintage OMEGA logo, which evokes the design elements of the original Seamaster Olympic Games watches. Despite the retro style and gold construction, the case is water resistant to 100 meters.
This 37 mm Seamaster is presented on a brown leather strap, carefully crafted with a matching leather lining for lasting comfort. The buckle is in polished Moonshine gold and features the embossed OMEGA heritage emblem.
A Grand Feu enamel dial
The Seamaster dial is a true work of art, made of Grand Feu enamel, a noble technique reminiscent of the Seamaster Olympic and its fired enamel dial. This ancestral process gives the dial exceptional depth and brilliance.
Omega has chosen to remain true to its origins while adopting a more refined approach. Exit the Cross of Merit and the applied Roman numerals, making way for a domed, clean and uncluttered white dial. The precisely sculpted indexes are in Moonshine gold, as are the diamond-polished Dauphine hands and the vintage Omega logo.
The indications, such as the “Seamaster” signature and the minute track, are crafted using grey Petit Feu enamel, a delicate technique that involves applying the enamel while it is still cold. This subtle touch of grey enhances the overall aesthetics of the dial and is a testament to Omega's attention to detail.
The result is a dial of incomparable purity and elegance, where gold, enamel and light combine to create exceptional visual harmony.
An automatic Manufacture caliber
Behind the polished caseback, which celebrates OMEGA's Olympic heritage through a commemorative medallion bearing the logo of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Games, lies the OMEGA caliber 8807.
This self-winding movement, equipped with a Co-Axial escapement, is Master Chronometer certified by METAS, an independent organization that tests and approves high-performance watches. Offering 55 hours of power reserve and resistant to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss, it is equipped with a free-sprung balance with silicon balance spring and bidirectional automatic winding. Its gold rotor and the arabesque Côtes de Genève adorning the movement testify to the care taken in the finishing of each component.
A certification card proving that each customer's watch has passed the Master Chronometer tests defined by METAS (the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology) is included in the special presentation box of the piece.
