The story

In 2008, Rolex revolutionized 55 years of “Submariner” design, one of its most iconic watches, bringing it into a new era! The brand presents three new Submariner Date references in solid gold: the 116618LN (yellow gold with black dial and bezel), the 116618LB (yellow gold with blue dial and bezel) and the 116619LB (white gold with blue dial and bezel). These models brought two significant changes to the collection. First, the long-awaited introduction of the “Cerachrom” ceramic bezel insert. Second, the “Super Case” design!

Let's start with the arrival of ceramics. Although somewhat anticipated after the appearance of the GMT-Master 50th Anniversary, the first Rolex watch with a ceramic bezel, the arrival of this novelty was celebrated by all enthusiasts of the brand with the crown. It was a major step towards modernizing one of the most famous models! While the yellow gold models were in keeping with the chromatic continuity of Rolex creations from the 1970s, the white gold version represented a real aesthetic breakthrough. Indeed, it was the first time Rolex had presented a Submariner in white gold!

The second major update to the Submariner Date in 2008 was also borrowed from the GMT-Master II 50th Anniversary, the introduction of the “Super Case”. Although the 40 mm diameter was retained, the Oyster case underwent some notable modifications: thicker lugs, a “squarer” design and a thicker profile with a redesigned crown guard. This new design, while respecting Rolex's aesthetic codes, met the demands of customers looking for watches that were more imposing on the wrist, while remaining very pleasant to wear and comfortable on the wrist.

The encounter

Technological advances introduced in 2008 enabled Rolex to completely rethink the design of the Submariner Date. The “Super Case” and the Cerachrom bezel, more resistant to scratches and UV rays, bear witness to the brand's expertise in materials and finishes. The yellow gold version, with this new bezel, offers exceptional visual appeal and foolproof performance.

In fact, once on the wrist, you immediately fall under the spell of its sunray-blue dial! The dial of this 116618 is called “Maxi Dial” in reference to its enlarged indexes and hands, which give the Submariner a more modern and dynamic style.

This version of the Oyster features the innovative “Glidelock” system, which allows the wearer to easily adjust the length of the bracelet without the need for additional tools, so that it fits perfectly on the wrist.
