Getting to know each other
The MIDO brand, created in 1918 by Georges Schaeren, an experienced Swiss watchmaker, and derived from the Spanish "Yo mido" meaning "I measure", quickly became a byword for technical innovation. The Multifort collection was born in 1934, becoming one of the first antimagnetic watches with an automatic movement. This was followed by the Ocean Star collection in 1959 with a revolutionary monocoque case, reducing any risk of water resistance of the case back. Today, the brand is present at numerous events and is associated, among others, with Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series and the UIA, the International Union of Architects.
The genesis of Decompression
This new Ocean Star model, based on the Mido Powermind 1000 ref. 5907 from 1961, is easily recognisable by the multicoloured decompression scale on the dial. This diver's watch was designed for freedivers who required an additional scale called "Timer" indicating the time according to the decompression stop. A true tool watch, it was marketed between 1961 and 1965. Today, these period models have become exceptional pieces that can reach a high value.
The added bonus
Although there are many dive watches available today, this is a marked improvement over the original model. Although these functions are present in the new version, forget the primary purpose of the decompression stop and timer. The big news is inside the case with a more performing movement, the Calibre 80 offering up to 80 hours of power reserve. Water-resistant to 200 meters (20 ATM), it is visible under water and in the darkest of nights with its indexes and hands covered with Super-LumiNova. The whole thing is protected by an obviously domed sapphire crystal and not to stop there, you will find a screw-in crown at 3 o'clock with a crown guard and a caseback featuring a starfish logo.
What's in the Worldtimer
Available in 40.5 mm, in addition to being a true diver, water-resistant to 200 metres, it displays an additional time zone thanks to the GMT hand and its unidirectional blue bezel with an aluminium insert. A Milanese mesh bracelet is supplied with the blue tropic initially proposed. Offered in its original blue to pink gradient colours, it is one of the few watches in its category to still feature a decompression scale. You will appreciate all the history of this Ocean Star Decompression offered in more seventies tones with a black dial graded towards yellow.
