Launched to celebrate six decades of 007 on screen, the steel Seamaster Diver 300M OMEGA is packed with tributes to the James Bond films, including a playful and dynamic nod to the iconic opening sequence, known and loved by James fans the world over.
The story
On October 5, 1962, one of cinema's most iconic characters made his screen debut. Since that first episode, the James Bond franchise has spanned an incredible 60 years. Based on Ian Fleming's novels, the 25 action-packed films, produced by EON Productions, have laid the foundations for a worldwide cinematic legacy.
Everyone has a favorite. But for OMEGA, there's a particular attachment to the "Golden Eye" film released in 1995. It was then the first time James Bond wore an OMEGA on his wrist. This mission marked the beginning of an innovative and elegant partnership which continues to this day. Like James Bond, the OMEGA watches he wore on his wrist evolved with his on-screen appearances.
After Pierce Brosnan's James Bond, it was Daniel Craig who took on the role of 007 for five memorable films. The actor has been an OMEGA ambassador throughout his career and has become an unconditional fan of the brand's watches. Alongside him, Naomie Harris, in the role of Moneypenny (Skyfall, Spectre and No Time To Die), has also joined the OMEGA family, bringing both elegance and feminine emancipation to the screen and off.
It was Lindy Hemming, the Oscar-winning costume designer who worked on five Bond films between GoldenEye (1995) and Casino Royale (2006), who suggested that 007 wear an OMEGA. Speaking of her choice of the Seamaster, she said, "I was convinced that Commander Bond, a navy man, diver and discreet gentleman of the world would wear this watch."
Hemming was right to associate OMEGA with the British Royal Navy. The company has a genuine link with the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), having delivered over 110,000 watches to pilots, navigators and soldiers during the Second World War. The Seamaster 300, originally launched in 1957, was distributed to military divers worldwide and, in 1967, a famous batch of second-generation Seamaster 300s was also delivered to the MoD for issue to certain units, so it's entirely plausible that Commander Bond received an OMEGA watch.
A model as classic as Bond
In keeping with 007's style, OMEGA's tribute to Bond's 60th birthday is classic in every sense of the word. Featuring a stainless steel case, the 42mm Seamaster Diver 300M has a blue dial nicely contrasted by rhodium-plated skeleton hour and minute hands and a white lacquered aluminum "lollipop" seconds hand.
This dial is crafted in blue oxalic anodized aluminum, adorned with a laser-engraved wave motif inspired by the Seamaster Diver 300M, the mythical reference 2541.80.00, worn by James Bond in 1995's GoldenEye.
On the anodized aluminum bezel, at 12 o'clock, a commemorative "60" replaces the traditional inverted triangle found on most Diver 300M models. This commemorative "60" indicator at 12 o'clock, along with the vertical line below it, the minute hand and many other elements, emit a green glow at night. The "lollipop" hour and seconds hands glow blue, matching the rhodium-plated hour markers.
This watch is dressed in a satin-finish stainless steel bracelet, which adds a touch of texture to the metallic aesthetic. It's not unlike the elegant Milanese strap of Bond's titanium watch in Mourir Peut Attendre
An animated background!
The famous opening sequence, in which Bond's silhouette appears in a revolving revolver barrel, appears on the caseback beneath a sapphire crystal decorated with microstructured metallization. The "moiré" effect animation is linked to the rotation of the "lollipop" seconds hand and is therefore continuous.
The OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer 8806 caliber powers this watch. Offering 55 hours of power reserve, it is tested and approved by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS). Magnetic fields are the enemy of mechanical watches, and this movement can withstand forces of 15,000 gauss.
A Bond-inspired box
Collectors of the commemorative steel Seamaster watch will also receive a blue wooden box decorated with the original Diver 300M motif, featuring three dots inspired by the opening sequence of the classic Bond film, including a secret push-button on the right.
