A mission: "Change For The Better"

Oris is a brand very much involved in protecting the environment, and is multiplying ecological initiatives, which it brings together under its "Change For Better" mission. The brand even published its first sustainability report last year and launched its emissions reduction program with a target of 10% per year! What's more, it has also produced watches with some of the world's most committed change agents, including the Wadden Sea Joint Secretariat, the Billion Oyster Project and Wings of Hope, which has twice been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize! And on many of its watches, we can find sustainable deer leather straps made by Swiss company Cervo Volante.

For this year 2024, Oris launches its fourth watch in the "Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition" series, as part of its longstanding commitment to Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest reef system.

Significant episodes of coral bleaching have endangered reefs around the world. Oris is partnering with the Reef Restoration Foundation, a pioneering non-profit organization, to conserve and protect these life-sustaining natural organisms. The Reef Restoration Foundation combats this phenomenon by cultivating more robust types of coral to recreate ecosystems capable of supporting more sensitive corals once again.

As part of a global network of scientists, the Reef Restoration Foundation is also in contact with Oris' partners in the United States (the Coral Restoration Foundation) to share results and learn from each other's projects. Oris has been collaborating with the Coral Restoration Foundation since 2017 and in the meantime has launched three limited editions to support their work, namely the Staghorn Limited Edition as well as two Carysfort Reef Limited Editions.

Based on the new Aquis 43.5 mm

This new Great Barrier Reef edition is inspired by the new Aquis Date Calibre 400, presented at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024, but with a few additional details designed to highlight the history of the foundation.

It starts with a gradient blue dial, which captures both the turquoise and blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef as seen from the sky and the refraction of the sun's rays through the water. This is one of the first times Oris has produced a watch with a vertical gradient dial! The watch also features a grey tungsten bezel and a case back with special engravings, including the limited edition number. The watch is limited to 2,000 pieces.

This is a modern, versatile Aquis Date, 43.50 mm, water-resistant to 30 bars (300 meters). Its stainless steel case, screw-down crown, crown guard, unidirectional rotating bezel and three-link bracelet have all been reworked. Like all Aquis Date Calibre 400 models, it is also equipped with Oris' patented strap-change and quick-set systems.

This new watch will directly support Oris' ongoing financial commitment to the foundation's mission.

On the movement side: a very enduring caliber!

The Oris Calibre 400 presented in 2020 was designed to fit a wide range of models from the independent house. It was therefore logical to find this movement in this diver. Completely new and designed in its entirety by the Oris Manufacture, this automatic movement defines "the new standard of performance in watchmaking" according to the brand. Indeed, there are four important features to remember about this caliber:

• Thanks to the use of two barrels, this Calibre 400 can deliver up to 120 hours of power reserve.
• It offers a precision of up to -3/+5 seconds per day, exceeding the COSC requirement, which allows a deviation of between -4 and +6 seconds per day.
• Thirty or so non-ferrous components are present within the Calibre, enabling proven antimagnetism. These include a silicon escapement wheel and anchor.
• It comes with a ten-year warranty and only requires servicing every ten years too.
