The short history of the Monaco

In 1969, Heuer made its mark with the release of the Monaco, which became the first square, waterproof automatic chronograph! The release of the film "Le Mans" in 1971 propelled the Monaco to international prominence thanks to Steve McQueen, who wore a Heuer Monaco in the film, providing a series of iconic images that even today are a central element of TAG Heuer's marketing campaigns.

The original version of the Heuer Monaco was available for less than 10 years, having been introduced in 1969 and the last version produced around 1978. TAG Heuer's reissues of the Monaco, however, have met with great success, having been offered in a variety of models over the past 25 years. Indeed, the Monaco chronograph may have been ahead of its time in the 1970s, but it has established itself as a modern classic in the 21st century

Two legendary brands

The Monaco Gulf story begins with a deep passion for top-level motorsports. The Gulf brand became an icon of the racing world thanks to its iconic colors, light blue and bright orange, which adorned the cars of its sponsored teams. During the golden age of motor racing in the 1960s and 1970s, its main partner, JW Automotive Engineering, left its mark on the history of endurance racing.

JW Automotive Engineering is best known for its entries in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, claiming overall victories in 1968, 1969 and 1975. The team has also featured some of the most famous drivers, including Jo Siffert, the legendary Swiss driver, aboard the legendary Porsche 917 in 1970 and 1971.

Jo Siffert, a friend of Heuer and one of the brand's first ambassadors, was also Steve McQueen's driving instructor for the film "Le Mans". Thus was born the link between Gulf, TAG Heuer and Porsche: Jo Siffert driving the Porsche 917 in Gulf colors, and Steve McQueen driving the same car in the cult film, with a Monaco on his wrist. This historic partnership solidified the Monaco's legendary status.

In 2007, to honor this association, TAG Heuer created a special edition Monaco in Gulf's colors. Since then, every watch in this collection has been a resounding success, becoming highly prized collector's items.

Finally, for the 2022 edition, TAG Heuer is hitting hard with an even more striking version of the Monaco Gulf Edition....

The model

The TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf retains the polished steel satin-finish case of the standard model, with a diameter of 39mm and its beveled sapphire crystal. But its main specificity is to be equipped with the Manufacture Heuer 02 movement, which offers 80 hours of power reserve and features a right-hand crown, a sign of modern evolution for a Monaco.

The watch features design elements that give it a sophisticated yet sporty look. It features playful nods to Gulf's iconic palette - notably on the two-plate dial, allowing for alternating finishes: opaline in the corners and satin in the center. Gulf colors appear on the minute sub-counters at 3 o'clock, while the Gulf logo on the dial is a brilliant white. You'll also find Gulf's refined, emblematic stripes running across the dial. One of the most pleasing elements of this special edition is the polished and rhodium-plated "60", a reference to the number on the hood of Porsche Gulf racing cars.

The back of the watch features an oscillating weight and column wheel, with Gulf orange engraving. There's also the perforated calfskin strap, made in Gulf's signature blue with orange lining. All these details, inspired by the heritage of motorsport design, make the TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf a true watch for racing enthusiasts.
