Panerai Luminor Submersible PAM00025 automatic 44 mm circa 2000
This PAM 025 is exceptional in more than one way! Indeed, this watch is the first Panerai reference with a Submersible case but also the first titanium watch marketed by the brand. A little overview...
The Brief History
Panerai's history of making diving watches dates back to 1936, when the Italian Navy ordered watches from the brand for its frogmen. The watches had to be large, sturdy and readable in low light conditions, especially in the very deep waters in which they were to be used.
In 1998, inspired by its history, Panerai launched the Submersible. It was a modified Luminor, which met all the criteria of a professional diving watch. Its case combined the cushion-like curves of the Luminor with the round bezel of the "L'Egiziano", a watch Panerai had designed for the Egyptian Navy in 1956. A few years later, Panerai made the decision to separate the Submersible from the Luminor line, making it its own collection of true diving watches, almost all of which are capable of reaching 300 meters.
Presentation
Today, we are pleased to present one of the most iconic Panerai, namely the reference PAM0025. While Panerai fanatics don't need this introduction, there are many things with this watch that are worth mentioning. Indeed, this watch is the first Panerai reference with a Submersible case but also the first titanium watch marketed by the brand.
On the 44mm titanium case, there is of course the unidirectional bezel, which is essential on diving watches. On this piece, the Panerai crown guard is exceptionally well displayed, with the iconic lever holding the crown in place. As dive watches should be, the PAM0025 is easily readable, equipped with a Hobnail (embossed, clou de Paris) dial. Panerai limits the use of this dial to certain models only, which are found in particular on the editions. The hour and minute hands are skeletonized and luminiscent, as are the Luminova-filled indexes.
The PAM0025 is covered with a sapphire crystal and a magnifying glass at 3 o'clock positioned above the date indicator. The titanium case back is securely screwed to the case, allowing for water resistance to 300m. It is presented on a rubber strap.
This watch is powered by a Panerai OP III caliber. The latter is a real tractor, designed on an ETA 7750 base devoid of its chronograph functions and offers a power reserve of 42 hours.
