A myth

The story of this monument to watchmaking begins in the early 1950s. For several years already, international and transcontinental flights had been developing. Pilots had to cross oceans and land in a different time zone. Pan American World Airways came up with the idea of ordering a watch that could read the time in two time zones simultaneously. The GMT-Master was born!

The basics

In 2005, Rolex celebrated the 50th anniversary of the GMT-Master by completely redesigning the GMT-Master II with reference 116718LN and which notably introduced a ceramic bezel insert that was initially produced in only one color: black. This first anniversary model was produced in yellow gold with a sublime green dial. At the 2006 Basel Fair, the "Rolesor" version reference 116713LN was presented, and a year later, the steel reference 116710LN was introduced at the same venue.

Compared to the previous generation (16710), this new version offers the following features:

• A "Triplock" crown
• Green 24-hour GMT hand
• A "Maxi" dial and a "Super Case" with thicker lugs and crown protector
• Cerachrom" 24-click ceramic bezel with gold numerals
• An all-new bracelet, with polished central links similar to those on the Daytona
• The ROLEX engraved ring
• A new movement, the 3186, with a new Blue Parachrom balance spring

The model we're presenting today is version 116713LN, which was introduced in 2006 and produced until 2019. And we particularly like it! Indeed, the fact that this reference shares key design elements with previous versions of the GMT, while being resolutely modern, adds a little "twist" that we don't find within current production.

This specific piece is entirely original and in excellent condition. It makes an excellent complement and starting point for any collection of Rolex sports models. Wear it every day and you'll understand why this model is so iconic.
