The story

Jack Heuer was a businessman who led the family business to profitability after taking it over in 1962, at the age of 30. The models produced by Heuer during his first decade at the helm of the brand are now regarded as the greatest triumphs in chronograph history: Monaco, Autavia and Monza. And if there's one collection that best illustrates Heuer's approach to watchmaking, it's the Carrera collection.

First introduced in 1963, the Carrera model served as the basis for a new generation of Heuer wristwatches. Its rapid success gave the company the financial footing to continue experimenting with design and engineering. In 2007, TAG Heuer launched the Grand Carrera, a prestigious new avant-garde series inspired by its unique racing heritage and characterized by unprecedented sophistication, performance and precision: the chronographs are now powered by Calibre RS movements distinguished by a unique display: the chronograph counters feature indicators with a rotating system. One of a kind!

At BaselWorld 2008, TAG Heuer once again pushes the boundaries with the Grand CARRERA Calibre 36 RS Caliper Concept Chronograph. The world's first automatic chronograph to feature a rotating Caliper scale! This chronograph has scooped almost every watchmaking award, including "Sport Watch 2008" at the Grand Prix de l'Horlogerie in Geneva, "Best Chronograph of the Year" at the Salon International d'Alta Relojeria (SIAR) in Mexico City, as well as China's "Fortune Design Award" and the Red Dot Design Award 2009.

A collection born of passion!

TAG Heuer's Grand Carrera was a prestigious collection of extremely sophisticated watches inspired by the spirit of modern GT cars. This watch line, launched in 2007, was innovative and contemporary when it came out. It embodied the brand's unique link with the world of motor racing and its passion for avant-garde design and technology. Among its many outstanding features is the ingenious rotation system inspired by GT car engines, which replaces the traditional hands with a disc displaying functional information even more clearly on the dial. TAG Heuer's award-winning Research & Development team had been working on the Grand Carrera project since 2005. The aim was not to replace the legendary Carrera, but to adapt new watchmaking fields and technologies to it, bringing it closer to the style and performance of contemporary motorsport in general, and GT cars in particular.

A unique design

This reference CAV5115 features a 43mm-diameter polished-brushed steel case with faceted curved lugs on both sides of the case. The screw-down crown is oversized, and the tachometric bezel is slim, leaving a large dial opening. The elegant black dial is designed to optimize legibility. The star on this watch? It's the exclusive Caliper Rotating Scale, an ingenious display mode marked by an oversized crown at 10 o'clock, which allows precise reading to a 10th of a second - magnified 10 times for fast reading.

For chronograph readout, which combine in the linear seconds counter at 9 o'clock and the date window at 4:30. The two "Rotating Systems", which indicate the chronograph minutes at 3het the hours at 6 o'clock, reach aesthetic heights with their "Côtes de Genève" decoration and polished beveling, something usually found on watch movements. The whole is protected by a curved sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment. Finally, to dress up this watch, there's a three-row bracelet featuring a steel folding clasp, equipped with safety pushers and the TAG Heuer logo.

Finally, under the hood we find a COSC-certified TAG Heuer Calibre 36 RS, a movement oscillating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, equipped with a column wheel, and allowing the central chronograph seconds hand to progress at intervals of 1/10th of a second. The movement is based on the famous El Primero from Zenith, a brand also present within the LVMH group, and offers around 50 hours of power reserve.
