An anniversary edition for 35 years of Newport

Launched in 1988 by the French watchmaking house HERBELIN, Newport celebrates, in 2023, its thirty-five years. To commemorate this new milestone for this iconic collection, the Franc-Comtois watchmaker unveils the Newport automatic chronograph 35th Anniversary Edition. Identical to the original model in its color codes - silver, gold and blue - this timepiece has been subtly redesigned to bring it into the present day. Powered by an automatic chronograph movement it enters the race in a limited series, issued in 350 numbered pieces for the world.

An emblematic design

This anniversary model respects the DNA of the iconic 1988 Newport, while modernizing it for today's times! For the record, the original Newport takes its shape from the portholes of transatlantic sailing ships. Hence its unique design and concept: a purely cylindrical case with a contained thickness, a glass positioned in the extension of a flat bezel and central lugs. Conceiving a chronograph while remaining faithful to this historic design was no easy task for the French watchmaker's team!

The model:

For this anniversary edition featuring a diameter of 42 mm, the two-tone case in steel and yellow gold PVD-coated steel has been refined to the extreme. The circular brushed steel bezel, sculpted on the underside, retains its original flat surface and houses a glass box relief sapphire crystal to accentuate the overall finesse. Thus realized, the whole is just 14 mm thick.

Decorated in the famous sunray Newport blue, the dial highlights beveled hour markers, evoking the geometric construction of a ship's hull. Punctuated at noon by a marine wheel, identical to the original logo of the first Newport, they highlight an ultra-precise minute track, positioned on the perimeter flange. Judiciously orchestrated horizontally, the "30-minute" counter at 3 o'clock and the "small seconds" counter at 9 o'clock stand out from the background thanks to their azure rhodium color. Embellished with a tachometric scale engraved and inked in black on the Newport-branded bezel, this chronograph measures average speeds ranging from 60 to 400 km/hour. Completed by a date window at 6 o'clock, the whole is flown over by faceted hour and minute hands, to the rhythm of a central second hand.

Subtly enhancing the dial finishes, the yellow gold PVD offers, through a play of contrasts, perfect legibility of the information. Also covering the central lugs, push-pieces and notched crown engraved with a marine wheel, it attenuates the model's sporty character by lending it a touch of timeless classicism.

A Swiss automatic chronograph caliber

Mounted on a blue crocodile-printed leather strap, domed at the center, this HERBELIN timepiece, water-resistant to 100 meters, embeds a Swiss-made self-winding mechanical movement, a guarantee of reliability and precision. Oscillating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and featuring 27 jewels, it has a power reserve of 62 hours. Visible through a transparent caseback, it reveals an oscillating weight engraved with the name of the Maison.

Made in France for having been designed, conceived, hand-assembled, regulated and controlled in the HERBELIN workshops located in the Jura mountains of Franche-Comté, the Newport automatic chronograph 35th Anniversary Edition reflects traditional French watchmaking expertise handed down, from father to son, for over 75 years. Issued in a limited series of 350, it is a fine tribute to the Newport collection, which propelled HERBELIN to international stardom.
