- Limited edition
Seiko presents a new limited edition of 1965 pieces, based on the design of its iconic 62MAS. This recreation features an all-new ultra-thin caliber, to be even closer to the original!
Seiko and the 62MAS
Japanese Manufacture Seiko is known to watch enthusiasts as one of the most reliable and legitimate brands in the world of diver's watches. Its first diver's watch was introduced in 1965. Featuring an automatic movement and water resistance to 150 meters, the watch proved its reliability when used by members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition from 1966 to 1969. In the years that followed, Seiko created numerous other diving watches which, thanks to their high quality and reliability, found favor with professional divers and adventurers alike. Today, Seiko introduces to the Prospex collection a recreation of the 1965 watch known to enthusiasts as the 62MAS. The design and dimensions of the new watch are virtually identical to those of the original, while its specifications are completely up-to-date.
Design-wise: an almost identical reissue!
For this reissue, Seiko decided to respect the shape and dimensions of the original as closely as possible: 38 mm in diameter. The case features a superb polished-satin finish, with a 46 mm lug to lug. The bezel features a stainless steel insert with an ultra-hard coating. This is still as slim and elegant as it was on the original and other high-end reissues.
Although faithful to the original, the new watch naturally features the modern enhancements of contemporary Seiko watchmaking. It features a box-shaped sapphire crystal and 200-meter water resistance for greater reliability. The bracelet pays homage to the original, but is reproduced in high-resistance silicone for greater durability and comfort. The hands and 12 markers, including that of the date window and that of the unidirectional bezel, are filled with Lumibrite to improve legibility in low-light conditions.
Finally, the caseback bears the words "Limited Edition", the serial number and the same dolphin emblem as on the original 1965 model. To push the detail to the limit, this watch comes in a specially designed box to evoke the retro look of the cases of the time, virtually the same as those sold with Seiko diver's watches in the 1960s.
Technical side
This recreation embarks the brand-new 6L37 caliber! This is the first movement in the 6L family designed specifically for diving watches. It features the same precision and power reserve as the 6L35 movement, which is the mainstay of the 6L family. However, thanks to modifications in construction and materials, its durability and shock resistance now meet the exacting standards of a Seiko Prospex diver's watch. It beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a comfortable 45-hour power reserve, allowing you to alternate with your other watches without having to wind it systematically. Designed to be reliable and robust, its construction is as simple as possible. Complications include a date window at three o'clock, which is very practical for everyday use! In terms of precision, the tolerance indicated by the firm is -10 to +15 seconds per day.
