The Sky-Dweller revolution

When it was launched in 2012, the "Sky-Dweller" was then the first entirely new watch with an entirely new name; the last "new model" the brand had released since then was the "Yacht-Master" in 1992. It was exactly the kind of watch one doesn't usually think of when one thinks of Rolex: a complicated watch, and what's more, a watch with a highly unusual implementation of several complications. This was one of the reasons why fans of the brand didn't often talk about it. But, in typical ROLEX fashion, it's actually much more interesting than you might think, given its place in the range. Indeed, at the time of its release, the "Sky-Dweller" was only available in precious metals, and was therefore seen more as a luxury watch, when in reality it was a true "toolwatch" as ROLEX knows so well.

However, five years later, things were different: 2017 saw the release of the "Sky-Dweller" in steel, which caused a tidal wave among collectors.

When the steel models were introduced, things changed and the dials became decidedly "sexier"! Now, the design of the "Sky-Dweller" is up to date: it features rectangular hour-markers and extended hands doubled by a "Chromalight" display.

As for the movement, this "Sky-Dweller" features Rolex's most unique and complicated caliber to date. The dial in no way does justice to the mechanical sophistication of this caliber. Everything points to the second time zone and date window, while behind it lies a SAROS annual calendar. The mechanism manages the date changes on its own, requiring correction only once a year, at the end of February. The months are displayed by notches that punctuate the bezel with a beautiful red color.

The entire system is managed by the "Ring Command", a complex mechanical module that is only revealed to the wearer. In fact, the rotating bezel allows you to select three positions that determine what you set once the crown is pulled out. You can set the month and date, select local time and reference time, without having to place the crown in different positions or use separate pushers. A solution as comfortable as it is technically brilliant.
