Without the Waldenburgerbahn, there might not be an Oris house. For nearly 120 years, it has been transporting people and parts to the factory gate in Hölstein, introducing Oris watches to the world. As it returns to service after a refurbishment, Oris is proud to celebrate its role in the history of the Manufacture with this watch produced in 1,000 units: the Waldenburgerbahn Limited Edition.

A Pointer Date in 40 mm

The Oris Big Crown is a true pillar of the Oris brand. This watch for pilots first appeared in 1938. Its oversized crown (hence the name "Big Crown"), allows for a good grip, even when wearing thick gloves, to allow for winding with gloves. It was also appreciated for its great readability, made possible by its large cathedral hands and its good size Arabic numerals. Let's not forget its railroad track, and a little later its central hand providing a "Pointer Date" function. This mythical watch is relaunched by Oris in 2018, 80 years after its creation, in order to offer a watch with a resolutely vintage style focusing on the function by prioritizing legibility.

For this reference 01 754 7785 4084-Set, we find the traditional 40mm-diameter steel case associated with an equally iconic fluted bezel. It has a black dial with large luminescent Arabic numerals and a railroad minute scale under a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment.

The finishing touch? The case back is engraved! It depicts the old Waldenburgerbahn steam locomotive and the limited edition number. It comes on a dark brown leather strap from partner Cervo Volante. It is made from red deer leather, free of chemical treatment and allergens with non-toxic vegetable tanning done in one of the last two tanneries in Switzerland. The result is an earthy, warm and durable leather that perfectly suits the vintage spirit of the Big Crown Pointer Date.

Engine Side

This Big Crown Pointer Date is powered by the Oris Caliber 754, which the brand developed from a Sellita SW201 base to implement the central hand date complication. The time is accurate and the automatic winding is driven by the characteristic red Oris rotor, visible through the sapphire case back. A power reserve of 38 hours is available when the watch is not worn on the wrist.
