The different types of stones: precious, fine, ornamental and organic
Did you know? There are only four gemstones: diamond, sapphire, ruby and emerald. All other natural stones are called "fine stones", or "ornamental stones" (the latter are also known as "hard stones"). Fine stones (which were once called "semi-precious", but this designation is no longer allowed), have the characteristic of being transparent, unlike ornamental stones which are opaque. We will find in the family of fine stones such as aquamarine, tourmaline, garnet, topaz, amethyst, or citrine, and in the ornamental stones lapis lazuli, tiger eye, malachite, turquoise, pyrite, carnelian or onyx. The last distinction that can possibly be made concerns the so-called organic stones that are mother-of-pearl, amber and coral, all of which come from living organisms such as shells and trees.
