Breitling Navitimer Ref. 806-36 40 mm mechanical Circa 1970
This Navitimer 806-36 is a rare pearl! It is one of the rare Valjoux 7736 versions to have been produced in very small series. Moreover, its yellow gold plated case brings a bit of elegance to this iconic model!
A little history
When you think of a vintage aviation watch, the Breitling Navitimer should immediately come to mind! Launched in 1954 with the reference 806, it features a chronograph and slide rule. The slide rule was an important innovation for pilots, as it allowed them to make important calculations in flight. While the Chronomat was the first Breitling model to feature this slide rule, the Navitimer, with its long association with the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association, established Breitling's reputation as a watch company for pilots. The AOPA has even made the Navitimer its official timepiece!
The first Navitimer models were equipped with all-black dials, a pearl bezel and a Valjoux 72 movement. In the 1960s, Breitling switched to a Venus caliber 178 movement and began to expand the offering with metal choices, such as the gold-plated one seen here. However, starting in 1967, a limited number of Navitimers equipped with Valjoux 7736 movements were produced. The reason is that the success of the Navitimer pushed Breilting to manufacture such large series of Navitimers that occasional shortages of Venus 178 movements occurred. The reference number then changes to 806-36. These models are easily recognizable, as they have large 10.1mm sub-counters and the Breitling "Twin Planes" logo.
What you need to know
On the wrist, this Navitimer is simply stunning. The dial surface is extremely well preserved and has retained its original glossy finish. The font and Twin Planes logo have not moved. Its gilt dial is entirely original and has never been touched up. It is fascinating to look at from different angles, especially at the tritium markers, which have faded as if over time.
For the record, this gold-plated case is typical of American models, due to the use of 20 micron plating. We paired this 806-36 with a black overstitched leather strap that stands out perfectly with the black of the dial and the gold of the case!
The Package
This Navitimer is a nice, honest example. The case has some scratches overall, but the facets of the lugs are crisp and clearly visible. It should be noted that the edges of the lugs and case have some oxidation of the gold plating. There is also some patina concentrated on the gold plating between the pushers and the crown and the plexi glass has a scratch at 4 o'clock. Its serial number indicates a production in 1968. It will be delivered without papers and in a pouch. This Navitimer 806-36 has been authenticated and controlled by our Breitling watchmaker and benefits from the Lepage Vintage 1 year warranty. You can also benefit from a free engraving (case back) on simple request.
