Few watches in Rolex history are as distinct as the Datejust Turn-O-Graph, aka the Thunderbird. Launched in 1953, it was the introduction of the first rotating bezel developed and mass-produced by the brand. This incredibly useful feature made it one of the first tool watches in the industry and filled a gap in the market that had not yet been filled. According to some, it was originally intended to serve as a test version for the first Rolex Submariner presented a year later.

The origin of the name "Thunderbird" comes from the nickname of the USAF Air Demonstration Squadron, created in 1953, which was the first supersonic aerobatic team. The story goes that a pilot started wearing a Turn-O-Graph watch, which eventually became the team's centerpiece, and the nickname quickly followed.

The Datejust Turn-O-Graph then underwent a series of design adaptations over time, and it wasn't until the turn of the century that the Datejust Turn-O-Graph would see its next big innovation. Indeed when it was launched in the late early 2000s, ref. 116261 represented the last generation of the Thunderbird before it was discontinued early in the next decade. Notably, this reference introduced a fluted bezel design for the Turn-O-Graph in favor of the sportier style bezel used previously, bridging the gap between Rolex's tool and dress watch styles. It also introduced a number of new dial colors and configurations, including the second hand and date receiving the signature red color, which helped distinguish the watch not only from previous generations of the Thunderbird, but also from its contemporaries in the Datejust line.

Although it is the most modern of the Thunderbirds, the 116261 is the quintessential Thunderbird: versatile in its purpose, visually distinctive, and simply ready for anything. It proudly displays its Datejust features with its 36mm Oyster case, ensuring a comfortable fit, and its fluted rose gold bezel that adds an elegant touch of contrast. Its singular design perfectly captures the high-low aesthetic for which the series is known and which has made it a cult classic for over a century.

Of course, this reference is powered by the legendary caliber 3135. This masterpiece of watchmaking is certified chronometer by the COSC and has been checked by our Rolex watchmaker at the chronocomparator.

This watch is in excellent condition, and there are no defects to report. It is equipped with a gold and steel Oyster bracelet that shows no stretch, although it is noted that it has slight traces on the center links.
