Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.022 ST-71 42 mm 1973
The Omega 145.022 is the ultimate grail for many collectors. It was this version that stormed the market in 1968, bringing with it a new movement, a new second hand and a logo printed on the dial. Available in many variations, the 145.022-71 is one of our favorites and we explain why...
The brief
While the Speedmaster was originally introduced in 1957 as a racing watch, it wasn't until 1969, when the chronograph accompanied the Apollo 11 crew to the surface of the moon, that it gained legendary status. Two known Speedmaster references were worn by the Apollo 11 crew, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin wore a 105.012, while Michael Collins wore the 145.012. A reference very close to the one we are going to present to you!
Indeed, one of the most iconic and important watches of all time is the reference 145.022, first launched in 1968, a year before NASA's first trip to the Moon. This reference spans about thirteen years, including many sub-references and variations, which are inscribed in the box bottoms. These six sub-references are 145.022-68, 145.022-69, 145.022-71, 145.022-74, 145.022-76 and 145.022-78, each with its own specific "characteristics". The reference series 145.022 was produced until about 1981, when the reference 145.0022 replaced it.
A Speedmaster like we like
For many collectors, the references released before 1988 represent the true Speedmaster of yesteryear, vintage. It is the reference 145.022 that introduced the new caliber 861 instead of the venerable caliber 321. It is the only notable evolution compared to the previous generation since it keeps its 42 mm case. It should be noted that from 1969, the logo was painted rather than applied.
The model we propose is a reference 145.022-71, engraved "First Watch Worn On the Moon.... ". We particularly appreciate on this version the step-dial perfectly preserved, as well as the hands and tritium markers with a beautiful patina that will evolve with time. Its tachymetric bezel is also original, as is its folded steel bracelet reference 1171, which has the correct endlink 633. Its serial number indicates a production between 1973 and 1974. A fascinating and historical piece that will sublimate your wrist in any circumstance and that will be able to join your collection!
