A Pointer Date in 38 mm

The Oris Big Crown is a true pillar of the Oris brand. This watch for pilots first appeared in 1938. Its oversized crown (hence the name 'Big Crown') allows for a good grip, even when wearing thick gloves, so that it can be wound with gloves. It was also appreciated for its great legibility, allowed by its large cathedral hands and its good size Arabic numerals. Let's not forget its railway track, and a little later its central hand bringing a "Pointer Date" function. This mythical watch is being relaunched by Oris in 2018, 80 years after its creation, in order to offer a watch with a resolutely vintage style that focuses on function while giving priority to readability. For this year, 2022, the model is available in an intermediate 38 mm version, alongside the 36 and 40 mm models.

For this reference 01 754 7779 4063-Set, we find a grey anthracite dial inspired by the colours of the Alps. This is not the first time Oris has produced beautiful gradient dials, but it is a first for the Big Crown Pointer Date. The darker areas on the edge of the dial add contrast and legibility to the beautiful art-deco numerals, while leaving a sense of openness towards the centre of the dial. All of this is of course protected by a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.

In the continuity of Oris' "Change For The Better

Oris is a brand that is very involved in protecting the environment, and has a number of green initiatives that it brings together under its "Change For Better" mission. The latest illustration is a partnership with Cervo Volante, a Swiss leather goods brand specialising in deer leather. Founded in 2017 by two friends, Kadri Vunder Fontana and Conny Thiel-Egenter, they are both involved in biology and biotechnology, related to environmental protection. Their primary objective was simple and noble: to use the scraps of deer skins to transform them into products and accessories with a true notion of sustainability.

For this collaboration, the two brands decided to accompany this Big Crown with a sustainable leather strap. It is made from red deer leather, without chemical treatment or allergens, with non-toxic vegetable tanning in one of the last two tanneries in Switzerland. The result is an earthy, warm and durable leather that perfectly suits the vintage spirit of the Big Crown Pointer Date. To take it a step further, this watch comes with a case and card holder made from the same material.

Engine side

This Big Crown Pointer Date is powered by Oris Calibre 754, which the brand has developed from a Sellita SW201 base to implement the central hand date complication. The time is accurate and the automatic winding is driven by the characteristic red Oris rotor, visible through the sapphire case back. A power reserve of 38 hours is available when the watch is not worn on the wrist.
