60 years after the first Speedmaster in space, the legend is reinvented in a gold Moonshine version, a true novelty both sporty and elegant
A myth
Every true Speedmaster fan knows the story of this Swiss watchmaking legend. Omega's Speedmaster Moonwatch has become a symbol of the conquest of space. It has been used in all NASA manned space flights from the Gemini project to the ISS programme and has been certified by NASA to accompany space missions since March 1, 1965. The Omega Speedmaster chronograph became a legend on Buzz Aldrin's wrist in 1969 during the Apollo 11 mission. To this day, the Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional remains the only watch to have gone to the moon, hence its nickname "The Moonwatch".
The Moonwatch Moonshine under the microscope
This new model has the same innovative design and spirit as the 4th generation model worn by the Apollo 11 astronauts during their first steps on the Moon.
This reference 310.63.42.50.10.001 is equipped with a case made entirely of Moonshine gold. Its green sunray step dial brings a touch of vintage inspiration to this model. This gives it more depth and emphasises the "pie-pan" effect dear to Omega. The hands, indexes and applied elements are also in 18K Moonshin gold. For the little anecdote, the chronograph hand has the same "drop" shape as that of the Speedmasters used on the Moon. The whole is protected by a sapphire crystal.
On this version, one immediately notices its green ceramic bezel equipped with a Ceragold tachymetric scale, with the famous "dot over" above the number 90. This Moonwatch comes with a green leather strap with a gold buckle.
The OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer 3861
The 3861 is the calibre that will be used in all new versions of the Moonwatch without distinction. It is partly based on the calibre 1861, although it includes no less than 50% new components. It has a Co-Axial escapement, which reduces friction and increases its precision, which is between 0 and +5 seconds per day on average. Officially certified by the METAS, this calibre is capable of withstanding magnetic fields of over 15,000 gauss and has a power reserve of 50 hours. In terms of decoration, the Omega calibre 3861 of this Speedmaster Moonwatch is sublimated by a unique luxurious finish, with rhodium plating and bridges decorated with Côtes de Genève in arabesque.
Did you know that?
Any true Speedmaster Moonwatch is defined by a few details that refer to its origins. The material used for the case is Moonshine gold, but what else? This material is an exclusive alloy of 18K yellow gold, unique to the brand. It is inspired by the moonlight that stands out against a deep blue night sky. In addition to being poetic, it offers a unique hue, paler than traditional yellow gold, as well as a higher resistance to fading and loss of luster over time. Its unique composition includes silver, copper and palladium for colour and stability.
This is not the first time Omega has used this gold alloy on one of its models. Indeed it was used on the Speedmaster 50E anniversary APOLLO 11 released in 2019 in limited edition. As you can see, this Speedmaster Moonwatch model shines and will not go unnoticed!
