Where it all begins

A place where the first speed records were set, Daytona Beach in Florida owes its fame to one man: Sir Malcolm Campbell. A car driver of English origin, he devoted a large part of his life to motor sport and was famous for his numerous records, particularly at the wheel of his car nicknamed "Bluebird", with which he set a new record of more than 396km/h. It was in this context of pushing the boundaries of the possible that Sir Malcolm Campbell was noticed by Hans Wilsdorf, founder of Rolex, and became a Rolex ambassador. The reference 116520

The reference 116520 is above all the launch of the calibre 4130; a calibre entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Presented in March 2000 in Basel, this "Phase 3" will remain in the catalogue for 16 years. It also differs from the "Phase 2 Zenith" by its dial: the seconds counter present at 9 o'clock on the 16520 is placed at 6 o'clock on the 116520. Its indexes are also larger and its counters are silvered. This piece has a dial nicknamed "APH", recognizable by the space between the "COSMOGR" and the "APH". It also has chromalight indexes. Its 78590 bracelet appeared on the V generation, recognisable by its folding clasp equipped with "EasyLink" technology.

Caliber 4130

This in-house movement has been designed with fewer components than a standard chronograph movement in order to improve its reliability. The calibre 4130 is the subject of numerous patents and advanced engineering, such as the use of a vertical clutch to activate the chronograph, a Parachrom balance spring for greater resistance to shocks and temperature variations, and ceramic ball bearings to drive the oscillating weight, thus increasing its efficiency...
