When tradition and the future of watchmaking meet, the result is the Ressence Type 2: an automatic watch, said to be intelligent thanks to its connected e-Crown... Let yourself be guided to the meeting of this watchmaking UFO
Welcome to automated air
Haute Horlogerie is entering a new era thanks to the work of Benoît Mintiens and his team. Ressence is moving away from traditional codes, with the need to create new codes, to be the precursor, the contemporary watchmaker of tomorrow. This leads to something new, unique, and challenges what a wristwatch can be in the 21st century. The watch we know no longer exists, it is being reinvented: this is the Type 2.
Combining the best of both worlds, that of the comfort of electronics and the emotion of mechanical know-how, the one bringing new functionalities and surprising ergonomics, the other bringing us that inimitable charm we love so much, lulling us with its famous "ticking". All this would not have been possible without the quest for perfection undertaken by the Manufacture. The emphasis is not primarily on chronometric precision, but on creating a better product as a whole. Its "less is more" philosophy allows it to produce this watch with a timeless design, enjoying a playful experience with a touch of magic.
Classic in appearance
The Type 2 does not deny Ressence's DNA, and the brand's visual identity can be seen at first glance. With its design at the forefront of Haute Horlogerie, which is made possible by the fact that it is an independent watchmaker, it embodies the vision of the future through its aesthetics, its construction and its conceptualisation. Measuring 45 mm in diameter, the Type 2's case is made of a single block of Grade 5 Titanium with fixed lugs, to be as light as possible, weighing only 50 grams. At 12 mm in height, the Type 2 is very slim, while retaining its curved lines and no crown, making it portable and comfortable for all.
Like all watches designed by Benoît Mintiens, the time display is different, thanks to a unique dial, which is composed of discs and dials continuously revolving around each other, with the information displayed on a single plane, a bit like words written on paper, making the reading easier, as it is intuitive and 2 dimensional.
On this Type 2 G reference, we find a grey titanium dial. A grey barenia leather strap also dresses and completes the dial. On top of this set, a double domed sapphire crystal treated with an anti-reflection coating covers the case, flush with the dial, giving the impression that the finger can touch the time.
On the back of the watch, there is a lever in the shape of an arc of a circle to manually wind and adjust the information visible on the dial. All this is possible thanks to a unique patented module, the ROCS.
Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS 2)
Although intelligent, the Type 2 remains fully mechanical, with its 479 parts. The expression of time on a Ressence watch begins with the Ressence Orbital Convex System, an exclusive module developed in-house. On this version 2, the ROCS is driven by the minute axis of a customised calibre 2892/A, which ensures precision by offering a 36-hour power reserve. Its balance beats at the classic frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
This ROCS 2 is made intelligent, through a connected crown, in order to meet new expectations and offer new possibilities.
A revolutionary crown called e-Crown
The crown as we know it today was created by Adrien Philippe in 1842. This mechanism that allows the watch to be wound and adjusted has remained unchanged for a century and a half, until Ressence challenged the status quo. This e-Crown connected crown module is placed between the ROCS time display module and the minute axis connected to the movement.
Electronics has always been considered an enemy of Fine Watchmaking, but now, with this technology, this watchmaking universe is taken to a higher level: the usefulness of a crown is retained, while giving it a little more intelligence. Entirely autonomous in energy with its recharging system via solar cells located at the level of the hour disc, the crown can be deactivated at any moment by the user, in order to be as discreet as possible.
The eCrown has a unique set of technology at its heart, with a microprocessor, a touch sensor and a Bluetooth chip. But there's no need for a charger, as it consumes less than 1.8 joules of energy per day. Connectable to your smartphone via a mobile app, this Type 2 takes us to the mechanical watch 2.0.
Smart and connected features
First of all, the Type 2 displays the time in the same way as the rest of the range: the minutes are present on the main dial, the hours on a sub-dial graduated from 1 to 12 and the seconds are on the smallest of the dials. However, an additional disc is present, that of the e-Crown, and it is there that this crown takes all its meaning: to activate it, it is enough to lightly tap on the surface of the glass to awaken the magic that operates in it.
The watch is then able to set and adjust itself automatically, checking its variations once a day to reset itself autonomously. Several time zones can also be set up, selectable by double-tapping the glass. These time zones can be set manually or via the app.
The crown can also prevent the energy from being deployed, locking the barrel automatically when the door has not been worn for 12 hours.
As you will have understood, the Type 2 combines the emotion of mechanical know-how and the comfort of electronics, thanks to the creative spirit of the Ressence brand, which once again offers us more daring and unbridled watchmaking.
